Kool-Aid Krazy!

A while back I did a little experiment with dyeing 100% wool yarn with Kool-Aid drink mixes. There are tons of websites out there with information on this, including color charts for the different flavors, so this is not the definitive resource! Do a search for more information.

Assemble equipment

Step 1: Get Your Equipment Together

You'll need

  • Vinegar
  • Container large enough to hold yarn hank
  • Small bowls for dye
  • Kool-Aid flavors of choice.

Be sure to use rubber gloves and microwave-safe utensils

Soak Hank. (Who's Hank?)

Step 2: Soak Yarn

Soak hank of yarn in warm water with a "glug" of vinegar while you prepare the dye, uh, drink mix.

Mix each color in separate bowl

Step 3: Mix dye

Mix each package of drink mix in a separate bowl with 1/4c warm water.

Hmm. Need a picture for this step. This is the fun part!

Step 4: Go Krazy

Remove the yarn from the water/vinegar soak and place it in the container. Drizzle your colors over the yarn as desired. You can use a spoon, a turkey baster, a syringe, or whatever you've got. Be sure that you get the color all the way to the center of the hank.

Microwave yarn-2,2,2

Step 5: Microwave the dyed yarn

Place bowl in microwave and microwave on high for 2 minutes. Let stand for 2 minutes, then microwave on high for 2 more minutes.

Cool yarn, then rinse in cool water

Step 6: Cool and Rinse

Let your yarn cool for a while in the bowl. Then rinse thoroughly in cool water.

Hang Yarn Outside to Dry

Step 7: Dry the yarn

Let your yarn hang outside to dry. Once dry, you can wind it into a ball. It will look much better and smell fruity!
