A personal challenge

I have designed my bag for the April Handbag Contest at PatternReview.com. Those contests would more appropriately be called (at least for me) “challenges,” given their virtual nature and the fact you make yourself a winner just by completing the item. Any prize is just icing on an already-delicious cake.

The inspiration for my bag was found at MyShape.com. It’s the Carla Mancini Hand Bag.

Mine won’t be a “knock off” just “inspired by.” I’ve always liked that curved top on a bag, and will use this opportunity to create my own. Here’s my sketch:

I’m not sure what I’ll use for straps. It will have to be something like a rope to fit through the casing. I considered using my spool-knitter to knit one, but that would take too long. It may just be a fabric tube with rope inside.

Since I don’t have any smooth, supple leather, I think I’ll use a fabric that I bought at Expo a couple of years ago. It’s reversible heavy cotton with lavender on one side and cream on the other. I initially bought it to make a jeans-style jacket, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

A pattern has been drafted, glued and cut. For my design, I used the rules of the golden section to guide me in size and seam placement.

After I get that second coat of paint on the vanity tonight, I hope to get started.

There’s still *plenty* of time.

I am amazed by your creativity and how industrious you are. You are a virtual factory making new things all the time. The bag plan sounds neat. It will be exciting to see if go from the drawing board to being a contest entry. As slow as I am it is so inspiring to see all the things you come up with.
