Besides wardrobe basics

bethh on Dec 7th 2009

I’ve been showing you the wardrobe basics I’ve been making, and I did get some work done on those this weekend.  I’ve a few other projects going, too, so let’s have a little variety here, shall we?

My ASG neighborhood group does charity sewing twice a year.  In April, we generally sew whatever the national ASG project is, and in September we usually make chemotherapy caps for the local cancer center.  Sometimes we change up and do a different project for a little variety.  One such project is bibs or clothing protectors for the local adult daycare center.

Not long ago, my contact there let me know that the ones we’d made last time were wearing out.  Our group scheduled it for April next year, but I decided to make a few on my own for now.  It would use up some fabric that I don’t have an immediate need for, and help out the daycare center until the our group has a chance to sew up a batch.

Win-win, eh?

Anyway, here’s one of those that I made:

Adult Bib

It’s laying on the pattern, which is about 18-19″ wide by ~36″ long.  I cut it on a six layers of 45″ cotton fabric and got 3 bibs from one length of fabric.  The sewing is easy:  sew two layers right sides together leaving opening for turning, clip, turn, press, topstitch edges to close opening, add hook-and-loop closure.   Sewing.org has a similar pattern here.

I also made another style using the fabric leftover from my in-progress Cozy Pinnie, but that one was not a good use of fabric, IMO.  It would be fine for making one or two special bibs for Aunt Sophronia, but not for mass-production sewing.  That pattern, which covers great, BTW, is here at Laura’s Sewing Studio.

So there are bibs all over the floor, and basics all over the table.  But there’s one more not-so-basic project that is strictly for my own crafting pleasure–I’m making a Father Christmas doll, which is something I’ve wanted to make for a long time.  This one is an on-line class at Cloth Doll Artistry using a pattern by Kat Lees.  It’s an easy pattern and should definitely be do-able this season.  I’ve gotten as far as painting my stand and cutting my body pattern.

You’ll be seeing more about this one, I’m sure!

Those bibs will be welcome. I actually make bibs for myself to use in the car. I always have a coffee in the car with me, which always ends up splashing. I keep a bib in the auto for that reason.
